Good review
I have made a very similar blade myself, but the finnish isnt as pretty and clean, it has what i call a "forge finnish" which i really like and personally prefer
@scholagladiatoria im looking for a messer. not a training one, one that is actually sharp. what do you recommend?
How long in a bastard hilt usually
I like the peened pommels better than threaded
Matt loves his double entendres.
Great vid !
Really want this sword, been putting off buying a sword coz I'm not really into owning things like that but enjoy watching channels like this, but this sword from all the other sword reviews on the different channels and it's price seems almost perfect for me.
Matt, I have a billion dollar question for you that I would really appreciate it if you answered. What to you, is the definition of a "true" Bastard Sword? The Bastard Sword is one of my all-time favorite Cruciform Swords and one of three swords that I would personally never leave home without (the other two being the Ottoman Kilij and the Japanese Katana). The reason I love the Bastard Sword so much is because I hear it's an almost perfect (jack-of-all-trades) Cruciform Sword, combining the reach of a Longsword with the lightweight and one-handed option of an Arming Sword. But I've seen several images that some say are Bastard Swords and others say, "No, those are Longswords," so finding an exact image of what a true Bastard Sword looks like has really been tough for me. So what to you constitutes a "true" Bastard Sword, and is the sword you discuss in this video a good example of a "true" Bastard Sword?
I like it. I'm not sure that I like the mirror polish though, because it looks like a stainless wall hanger at a glance, but I can imagine whoever polished it looking at me in horror if I scuffed it up.
Ok, I was wrong. I just got The Duelist and it's a work of art. The mirror finish is flat and even enough to use as an actual mirror and does not look like a stainless wallhanger. I'm going to baby this one.
In my opinion wit would look so much better if the handle were to taper a bit more towards the pommel or just better shaped overall the cross and blade i have no problem whit
When's that cutting video coming, Matt? 😀
This looks like an almost identical blade to the Ronin Katana Euro #5. While the grip and scabbard look nicer on this one, I'm not sure if that is worth double the price. The RK is also peened in a nice fishtail pommel.
Can a person have a that has a single handed sword blade, but a two handed handle?
$559.20 USD right now using link in description. Regular price of $699.00 in case any of you were wondering.
Has anyone purchased or handled one of these personally or one of the other European swords by Dynasty Forge that might be similarly made? I see one comment in the thread that sounds like a lemon, but I don't know if that's truly an outlier or not. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Thanks very much for this review, Matt! I am always on the lookout for more affordable high quality swords for my students. I'll place an order and do some test cutting with it as well. BTW, this sword reminds me very much of the Albion Fiore (with a fuller added). I am impressed with the thickness at the base. We don't usually see sword makers do this many things right on a sword at this price point.
Matt “I’ll cover it in another video “ Easton!
end him rightly 😉
@Scholagladitoria How Tall are you? You make that 4 foot sword look relatively small
And my light fittings, well, they're a mess!
To own better and more authentic swords is always desirable but is often hard to afford
The dynasty forge link provided doesn't seem to be working. Is anyone else having this problem or is it maybe a problem coming from my end? 🙁
Cutting video with this beauty please 😀
The power of Easton. Tried to go to their site, it is crashed, too many requests.
I have wanted a few Chinese swords made by Dynasty Forge for some time now. I think their quality is rather evident. This was a wonderful review, Matt.
Why does the sword look like it's made of stainless steel? It's too shiny.
Why was mirror polish so common if it took more effort?
I think a lot of people don't like the mirror finishes on swords because they associate them with lower quality swords given a high polish… the proverbial polished turd. So we associate mirror polish with cheap junk. Maybe that will change with time.
I bought this sword last week because you gave it such high regard and it has been a great disappointment ! You have grossly overrated this sword. It's shinny ,sharp and comes with a nice scabbard but fit and finish is junk. The hilt rattles the pommel is bent and out of wack like all cheap mass produced swords and you were right about the leather wrap on the handel it came unglued after two days.I'm no sword expert like you but even the distal taper seems kind of funky it narrows at the end of the fuller then thickens considerably the rest of way to the point with hardly any tapering at all.I just think people should know this before they think there getting some great deal.
So in summary, the two big issues with this sword are that they didn’t skive the handle wrap enough and they didn’t hand strop the edge.
Also, PSA: with modern threads and modern steel, there is also modern threadlock 😃. Blue for temporary, red requires heat to break the bond.
So the pommel can be thrown 🤔
The reason most medieval replica swords have a satin finish is because cheap swords always have a mirror finish. Cheaper to chrome a blade than polish to even a satin finish. Being all the cheapest wall hangers are chrome to make your high quality blade appear to be the high quality it is it needs to not resemble the cheap ones and thus a satin hand sanded finish that shows care was put into it.
Absolutely agree with your point on satin polish. It annoys me too. Why some people consider it more fitting for medieval swords is beyond me.
looks nice.
The main problem with Dynasty Forge (Huanuo) in both their Japanese and Euro swords has been their handles.
Holy cow, they want a lot for shipping !
Aaaaand now I want it !!!
Shame about that nut…
I was just about to send my dog off in search of a feline intruder when I realised it was yours.
i cant imagine a blacksmith being able to forge the inside and outside threads for a pommel
Ok. Now I want their sky jian. 🙁 https://www.dynastyforge.com/swords/chinese_arms/swords/sky_piercing_sword_jue_yun_jian/
And their o-katana. 🙁 https://www.dynastyforge.com/swords/japanese_arms/musha_class_spring_steel/musha_okatana_hi_musashi/
Hey Matt! Did you mention if this review piece was given to you or if you bought it with your own money? Either way, I expect it to be honest and it looks like Valiant Armoury has a challenger in the high medium price range.
Matt, I believe you that some historical swords and armor had a mirror polish, but I am curious, what is the evidence that we have for this? It seems unlikely that any archaeological finds could still have that level of polish. Is the evidence in manuscripts and other documents? Thanks a bunch, good sir!
Awesome mate excellent blade just what I’ve been looking for,
Looks great man, congrats on the new blade
If you could do a review of the Cold Steel "English Basket Hilt", I'd greatly appreciate it. (Just throwing that out there)
